Oracle Base Database Service Adds AMD Standard E4 Flex Shapes and Higher Performance Storage

Flexible Provisioning of Compute Resources

You can now run Oracle Database applications faster, with more data, and using right-sized database resources with the Oracle Base Database Service family on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). AMD Standard E4 Flex shape Virtual Machines (VMs) and OCI Block Volume storage with higher performance allows you to run Oracle Enterprise Database Service with up to twice the compute, memory, storage, and networking resources than was previously possible. These new capabilities also provide higher performance compute and storage for Oracle Standard Database Service.

These VM DB System shapes are based on third-generation AMD EPYC Processors, allowing you to provision any number of OCPUs, up to a maximum of 64 OCPUs (128 vCPUs) with a single Enterprise Database Service VM. Each OCPU includes 16 GB of memory so you can increase the memory available in a single VM to 1 TB by adding more OCPUs. Each OCPU also includes 1 Gbps of network bandwidth with the total amount of network bandwidth reaching 40 Gbps for a VM with 40 or more OCPUs.

Higher Performance Storage for Greater IOPS and Throughput

Oracle Base Database Service now also supports OCI Block Volume storage with higher performance for workloads that have high IO requirements. AMD VM Standard E4 Flex shapes provisioned with higher performance storage can scale data capacity up to 80 TB and achieve a maximum of 640K IOPS and 5,120 MB/s throughput for single-node deployments. With a 2-node Oracle RAC deployment and higher performance storage, you can achieve a maximum of 1,000K total IOPS and double the throughput of single-node deployments. OCI Block Volume storage with balanced performance is still available and provides a good balance between performance and cost savings for most workloads.

The theoretical IOPS is now shown in the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Console when you configure a VM DB System so you know what level of IO performance to expect. The Console displays the theoretical IOPS given the number of OCPUs and storage configuration. It also identifies which resource, compute or storage, limits IO performance so you adjust them as needed to achieve the desired result.

Scaling your Database VM System

The number of OCPUs in a compute shape can be easily scaled up or down from the OCI Console, with a VM reboot required for the change to take effect. When you are doing this in a 2-node Oracle RAC environment, reboots are done in a rolling manner, so no database downtime is experienced.

You can also independently scale-up data and recovery storage without impacting the VM DB System environment. This allows you to increase data storage capacity and performance when needed so you can economically support growing data warehouses and transactional workloads.

Develop and Deploy Database Applications in OCI

Oracle Base Database Service supports Oracle Database Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition 12c, 19c, and 21c. Its converged database engine helps you improve both developer and operational productivity by supporting any data, workload type, and development style. Oracle Database greatly simplifies application development, data integration, and database management by enabling you to use a single enterprise-grade database that can be deployed anywhere instead of forcing you to deploy a different single-purpose proprietary database for each data type and workload. Full compatibility with Oracle Database deployments on-premises and in the cloud allows you to develop applications once and run them wherever they are needed.

Oracle Base Database Service provides cloud automation using the OCI Console or APIs that helps you reduce manual database administration tasks and the chance of human error. Integrated Oracle RAC and Oracle Data Guard serve as the foundation for the Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture, which forms the high-availability blueprint for Oracle databases in the cloud. Oracle Base Database Service security not only secures data in the Oracle Database, but also provides multi-layer defense in-depth security from the database to the cloud. Defense in-depth works by implementing controls throughout the Oracle stack to strike a balance of risk mitigation and operational efficiency.

New capabilities are continuously developed for Oracle Base Database Service. Here are some recent enhancements that make it even easier to use.

◉ Easily deploy customer specific updates across multiple systems with custom database software images

◉ Easily create and manage Pluggable Databases (PDBs) using the OCI Console or APIs

◉ Centrally manage encryption keys with OCI Vault

◉ Monitor database performance with built-in Performance Hub and Metrics
