Announcing Oracle Database Service for Microsoft Azure

Today, at Microsoft Inspire, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, and Larry Ellison, Chairman and CTO of Oracle Corporation, announced the availability of the Oracle Database Service for Microsoft Azure. With this new fully managed service, Azure customers can easily provision, access, and operate enterprise-grade Oracle Database services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with a familiar Azure-like experience. Users can seamlessly build Azure applications using the high-performance, high-availability, and automated management of Oracle Database services such as Autonomous Database running on OCI.

Offering customers choice with Azure and OCI multicloud capabilities

Thousands of customers trust Microsoft and Oracle for their enterprise applications, and many of them use the two sets of software and cloud products together. Since 2019, we have partnered to deliver the OCI-Azure Interconnect, which offers secure, private interconnections with sub-2 millisecond latency in 11 global regions and more regions on the way.

Microsoft and Oracle are extending this collaboration to further simplify the multicloud experience with the announcement of Oracle Database Service for Azure. Many of our joint customers, including some of the world’s largest corporations such as AT&T, GE, and FedEx, want their choice of services for the best performance, scalability, and availability to accelerate their transformation efforts. The Oracle Database Service for Azure builds upon the core capabilities of the OCI-Azure Interconnect and enables any customer to seamlessly integrate workloads on Microsoft Azure with Oracle Database services on OCI. Customers using the service also benefit from having no data egress or ingress charges when moving data between OCI and Azure.

An OCI managed service with familiar experience for Azure users

With the new Oracle Database Service for Azure, Azure teams can treat databases running on OCI like an Azure resource. In just a few clicks, users can connect their Azure subscriptions to their OCI tenancy. The service automatically configures everything required to link the two cloud environments and federates Azure active directory identities, making it seamless for Azure users to use the service. It also provides an Azure like user interface and API experience for provisioning and managing Oracle database services on OCI.

Once your databases are up and running, the service delivers OCI database metrics, events, and logs to Azure, alongside the rest of your Azure data for unified telemetry and monitoring.

In addition, the service also simplifies customer support with a collaborative support model to offer a seamless issue resolution process that can be initiated with either Microsoft or Oracle.

Oracle database enterprise-grade performance, reliability, and automation combined with Microsoft Azure

Applications running on Azure leverage the full capabilities of the underlying OCI Oracle database platforms, including high performance, scalability, and availability enabled by Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC). For all OCI database services, the infrastructure is managed by Oracle, and you have automated database lifecycle management. Furthermore, when you use the fully automated Autonomous Database environment, all database monitoring, tuning, patching, and upgrades are done for you so you can focus on improving applications and growing the business.

Azure applications that use databases running on OCI’s Exadata Database Service and Autonomous Database use Exadata’s unique underlying optimizations to process more transactions per second than non-Exadata environments and return query results faster by using sub-19 microsecond internal SQL latency and 10s of millions of IOs per second. Analytical queries from Azure applications such as Power BI can now achieve extreme throughput at scale with 100s of gigabytes to terabytes per second of internal database scan and up to 30 petabytes of compressed database capacity.

These innovations are part of our vision for OCI’s distributed cloud – a cloud that can deliver services wherever and however customers need them. In addition to this partnership with Microsoft Azure, OCI Dedicated Region and Cloud@Customer solutions deliver cloud services to customers in more than 60 countries, in addition to 39 public cloud regions in 21 countries, 11 launched in the last 9 months, plus multiple US National Security regions. All OCI Regions support a range of hybrid cloud and multicloud architectures with our management services.
