We are pleased to announce the General Availability (GA) of Grid Infrastructure (GI) version upgrade to 19c on Exadata Cloud@Customer Gen2. With this release, you can use automation available through OCI to upgrade your VM Cluster GI version to 19c.
Key Customer Benefits
With GI Upgrade to 19c capability on the VM Cluster, you can now
1. Upgrade existing VM Clusters to 19c Grid Infrastructure version, a required step before upgrading databases on the cluster to 19c
2. Run a precheck before upgrade to the 19c Grid Infrastructure version to identify and resolve compatibility issues in advance
The GI version upgrade to 19c is applied in a rolling manner across the cluster and should not incur downtime for running database workloads. Since GI upgrade is a planned activity, Oracle recommends running a precheck to ensure compatibility before initiating the upgrade. Even if a precheck is not run, the system will always run an implicit precheck as part of the GI upgrade workflow to ensure the cluster is ready for an upgrade.
OCI Console Experience
Let's go over the following user journeys for GI upgrade
◉ Precheck to Upgrade Grid Infrastructure to 19c
◉ Upgrade Grid Infrastructure to 19c
1. Precheck to Upgrade Grid Infrastructure to 19c
All VM Clusters running older GI versions will now have an upgrade option to apply the 19c GI version. This GI version upgrade option is part of the software updates available on the VM cluster.
Note: Since GI upgrade to 19c is a prerequisite to upgrade databases to 19c, all VM Clusters with databases running versions nearing the end of support have an information banner displayed on the console cluster details page reminding you to upgrade the GI version before initiating the database upgrade.
The software updates management page for a VM Cluster shows the specific 19c GI versions available as upgrade options. The latest two versions of 19c GI are available as upgrade targets. Oracle recommends running a precheck for the specific 19c GI target version before initiating an upgrade. Precheck for an upgrade to 19c GI does not affect the availability of databases running on the cluster.
2. Upgrade Grid Infrastructure to 19c
You can initiate an upgrade to the 19c target GI version once the precheck completes successfully. Completing a precheck beforehand is recommended but not required. GI upgrade to 19c is applied in a rolling manner and should not affect the availability of the workloads running on the database.
While the GI upgrade to 19c is in progress, lifecycle management actions on the VM cluster are briefly unavailable. You can view the progress of the upgrade through the work request details on the VM Cluster.
The update history for the VM Cluster calls out the upgrade to 19c GI operation with a timestamp, status, and version used for this update. This view provides a historical view of all the updates (minor version changes) and upgrades (major version changes) for various software components performed on the VM cluster over time.
Considerations
◉ Only the latest two 19c GI versions are available as upgrade targets for VM clusters.
◉ GI upgrade to 19c option is unavailable if a scheduled Exadata infrastructure maintenance starts within 24 hours.
Availability
The Grid Infrastructure (GI) version upgrade to 19c is now available on Exadata Cloud@Customer Gen2 in all OCI commercial regions.
